Vermeer Study

Alright, Art school Fall 2011 is finally over. To celebrate, here are some of my works (for better or for worse) from throughout the semester.

Here is my master study; Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer. As much as I love Vermeer and this painting, recreating this was a nightmare. Just choosing Vermeer for my study master was an ordeal; my teacher is more contemporary/abstract art based. When I told her I wanted to do this, she doubted anyone in the class could do it and suggested I go with something simpler. Well wouldn't you know, that lit my fire. I locked myself in to recreating this iconic piece.
This also lead to me stubbornly deciding to freehand the sketch without consulting the projector like our teacher wanted us to. Because of this, I had to continually correct innaccuracies which stretched my work time out far too long. There was also an incident where I accidentally put down water color on this (which was almost tragedy due to the fact that this is an oil painting), but thankfully it was all cleaned off.

Looking on it now, there are still some discrepancies from the original.... But ah well. Overall I am very pleased with the results, and my teacher was satisfyingly stunned.
